Sexual offences

Sexual offence allegations are among the most serious and sensitive matters in the criminal law. An allegation alone — before any charge is made — can have immediate and severe consequences for employment, relationships, and reputation. Early intervention and complete discretion are essential.

Offences covered

I accept instructions in all sexual offence matters, including:

  • Rape and assault by penetration
  • Sexual assault
  • Child sexual abuse and exploitation
  • Historic sexual offences
  • Voyeurism and indecent exposure
  • Possession and distribution of indecent images
  • Sexual communication with a child
  • Grooming offences

Pre-charge intervention

Where an investigation is underway but no charge has been made, early engagement with the police and the CPS can in some cases prevent a charge being brought. This is particularly important where there are credibility issues with the complaint, corroboration difficulties, or where the evidence does not meet the threshold for prosecution.

Disclosure and unused material

Sexual offence prosecutions frequently involve significant disclosure issues. The complainant's digital communications, social media activity, and third-party material are often highly relevant to the defence but are not always proactively disclosed by the prosecution. I will pursue disclosure rigorously where it is likely to assist the defence.

Frequently asked questions

Complainants in sexual offence cases have automatic lifetime anonymity. Defendants do not have automatic anonymity. Reporting restrictions may apply in some circumstances and I can advise on the position in your specific case.
A conviction for a qualifying sexual offence results in automatic notification requirements under Part 2 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003. The period for which you must comply depends on the sentence imposed. Failure to comply is a criminal offence.
Historic sexual offence allegations are prosecuted regularly and carry the same penalties as recent allegations. The passage of time raises issues of memory, disclosure, and the fairness of the trial which require careful consideration.
